EPISODE 10: THE OBLIGATION OF AND MATTERS RELATED TO ZAKATUL-FITR

All praise and adoration is to Allaah – the Lord of the worlds. May His Peace and Blessings be upon the noble soul of Muhammad, his households, his companions, and those on the path of righteousness until the Day of Resurrection.

The Obligation of Zakatul-Fitr

Zakatul-Fitr is often referred to as Sadaqatul-Fitr. The word Fitr means the same as Iftar, breaking a fast and it comes from the same root word as Futur which means breakfast.
Islamically, Zakatul-Fitr is the name given to charity which is distributed at the end of the fast of Ramadan. This is prescribed for the Muslims to purify and support their fasting and as well as to make up for the wrong deeds committed during the month of fast. It’s again to enable the poor to participate in the rejoicings of Eide-l-fitr.
Zakatul-fitr is obligatory on every Muslim whether male or female, minor or adult, provided that he/she has extra provision beyond his/her need as it was narrated by Ibn Umar (Allah pleased with him) that:

“Allah's Apostle(PBUH) enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the 'Id prayer.” (SahihBukhari Vol. 2, Bk 25, no. 579)

However, the head of the household (that is, the father) may pay the prescribed quantity on behalf of other members of the family.

Matters Related to Zakatul-Fitr

When to Pay

The time for the payment of Zakatul-fitr is from the sunset on the last day of fasting until the beginning of the Eid prayer on the following day. However, it can be paid before the aforementioned time as some of the prophet’s companions used to pay it a couple of days before the Eid day.
Nafi` (Allah pleased with him) narrated
“…People used to give Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (even) a day or two before the 'Id” (SahihBukhari Vol. 2, Bk 25, no. 587)
Prescribed Quantity

The prescribed quantity for the payment of Zakatul-Fitr is the same for everyone no matter the amount of their incomes. From the hadith narrated by Ibn Umar quoted above, the prescribed rate of Zakatul-fitr is one sa’ (that is, two handful measurement) of local foodstuffs such as rice, wheat, barley & dates.

Recipients

Allah, The Exalted mentioned in the Qur`an:

“Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveller…” (Q9:60)
