POSITION OF THE LAW ON THE USE OF HIJAB: A CASE STUDY OF A NIGERIAN MUSLIM FEMALE DENIED BEING CALLED TO THE BAR

Image
by O. G. Chukkol One of the challenges Muslim females are facing is the wearing of hijab. Hijab is a veil they use in covering their body. These challenges are found even in public institutions. The proscription of the use of veils is normally done through rules made in those institutions. For example there has been complaint that hijab is not allowed in Nigerian Law School, it happened also in Kwara, Lagos, Osun State etc where students were not allowed to wear hijab to schools. This article seeks to establish that prohibiting Muslim females from wearing veils in public institutions is unconstitutional. Whether the position is the same in private institutions or not is outside the scope of this article. To clear a preliminary point, I am a Christian and shall by the grace of God die a Christian. This work is based on my little understanding of the law and love for rule of law. The work is also informed by my agreement with the words of Martin Luther King Jr. who once said:

Chronicles of the UN Resolutions on Jerusalem and Why President Trump Needs Some Historical Lessons

Image
by Yusuf Jimoh Aweda Reactions have hovered the world over  president Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital . This looks pretty more like an unscrupulous decision, made during a vital chess game that could expose the king to a disastrous ending. In simple paradigm, President Trump’s decision is like Russia declaring Washington as the capital of Iran. Jerusalem is internationally recognized as a Palestinian territory that was occupied militarily, forcefully and illegally by Israel in 1967. It is a world on its own that conceives the wider world, it has a history that is connected to a people. Jerusalem has got documented chronicles of happenings that connect the modern politics and history being experienced on the world stage today. It is a spiritual ambiance of the three most popular religions in the world. Just recently, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for example was so meticulous on November 18, 2017, when it exp

TAPPING FROM THE BENEFITS OF SUKUK

Image
Authored by Sherif Olanrewaju T. SUKUK BOND: TAPPING FROM THE OPPORTUNITIES IT OFFERS Once again, Nigerians, especially those whose knowledge are scanty about the array of solutions inherent in the issuance of sukuk bond to the Nigerian capital market, are chanting divisive rhetoric without due consideration for how the socio-economic challenges bedeviling the country can be resolved with it. The ranting has adequately opened the door of opportunities for those who are informed to provide explanations on how the Islamic model seeks to answer our economic questions. What is sukuk bond? Linguistically, sukuk means ‘certificate.’ According to the rules and regulations of the Securities and Exchange Commission 2013, sukuk connotes ‘investment certificates or notes of equal value which evidences undivided interest/ ownership of tangible assets, usufructs and services or investment in the assets of particular projects or special investment activity using Shariah principles and c

5 Simple Ways to Incorporate Islam to all Levels of Education at Homes and Schools

Image
by Shittu Rasaq Alhamdulilah, knowledge is the foundation with which Islam stands. This could simply be reinforced by the simple fact that the first chapter revealed to the messenger of Allah, Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) emphasises on this. In addition, if we care further to probe into generation before the generation of Muhammad, we will still see the relevance of knowledge being the basis of lives. Allah says in Quran chapter 2 verse 30 that Adam was taught the names of all things. It is also the basis with which we applaud our scholar with reference the statement of Allah which say those who revere their creator are the scholars, the knowledgeable. It is with this we would equivocally establish that knowledge is the foundation with which Islam is built. Being that as it may, why then do we need Islamization? Knowledge could be likened to a double edge sword. The right side of the sword is the Islamically acceptable application of knowledge while

HOW TO FORM AND MAINTAIN RELATIONSHIPS

Image
by Yusuff Ademola Adesina Editor: Sherif Tanimola ‘And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands[in regret]he will say, ‘Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way. Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend.   He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me…’ (Q25: 27-29) According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, relationship means the way in which two or more people, groups, countries, etc., talk to, behave toward, and deal with each other. Islam as a religion emphasizes the importance of relationship which cut-across a broad spectrum of areas including family, friendship, and good neighbourliness. Many types of relationships have been identified in previous writings of others; among them are friendship, family, romantic, and professional relationships. However, in this article, we shall limit our discussion to forming and maintaining family and friendship relationships. Forming and Maintaining Family Relationship Islam is a co

HOW TO DEAL WITH DIVORCE & BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS

Image
by Munirah Abdullah (d_dignified_Muslimah) Editor: Tanimola Sherif Merriam Webster defines the word ‘Divorce’ as ‘to dissolve the marriage of (a spouse) by judgment or decree of divorce’. The word shockingly sinks into my brain each time I meet a new friend or a stranger and get to discover, after getting affectionately glued to each other, that his/her parents are divorced. To be honest I hardly see that glimpse of happiness in their eyes. It is far removed from the feelings that will naturally envelope one when one hears of his mum being delivered of a baby, or the news of a wedding ceremony. The countenance and expression on their faces appear stale like ‘it happens, that's life’. In this era of gigantic world civilization compounded by feminism, women tend to perceive themselves as being equal to men, regurgitating expressions such as ‘what a man can do, a woman can do better.’ This has undoubtedly made the percentage of divorced people to be astronomically high. HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPOUSE?

Image
by Yusuff Ademola Adesina “And of His signs is that He created you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (Q30:21) The religion of Islam attaches great importance to marriage and marital life of human. It is believed that progress and development in every aspect of our live roots in how our family is formed. Hence, choosing a spouse should not be taken lightly, nor left to chance. Rather, a spouse should be chosen in accordance to the Islamic guide lines. The first criterion to consider when choosing a spouse is faithfulness and righteousness. Whoever you are choosing as your spouse should have a firm belief in Allah and the principles of Islam. Relationship without primary, common goal of religiosity is, perhaps of no value. A person who has no religion is worthless! This is the reason Islam strongly recommends marriage between believing men
