EPISODE 7: The Significance and Etiquette of Making Supplication – 2

All praise be to Allaah, may His peace and blessings be upon the Last Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his households, his companions, and those on the path of righteousness until the Day of Judgement.

The month of Ramadan is well known to everyone for its blessings. However, supplication is  essential to the acquisition of these blessings. But, it is one thing to make supplication; its admissibility is another issue. Hence, understanding the concept of making supplication is insufficient without comprehending how they are answered.

Having discussed the significance and some etiquette related to supplication_making in the previous episode, this episode aims to provide insight on acceptance of supplications which is essentially the goal of making supplication.

Acceptance of Supplication

Although, some people may choose to supplicate to other than Allaah (the only One and Unique God, the Creator of all that is on the earth and in the heaven and Sustainer of the creatures), but yet, the rightly guided acknowledge that none other beside Allaah can grant or accept supplications. For, it is unarguable that the only Creator is Allah, and thus, the maintenance and sustenance of the creatures belongs to Him.

“O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you...” (Q2:21-22)

In this regards, do not direct your supplications to any other than Allaah – Indeed, Allaah grant the invocations of the supplicants. But unfortunately, not everyone knows how supplications are accepted. Many people believe that acceptance of supplication is when Allaah grants  exactly what is being asked for. However, this is just one amongst the ways of supplications acceptance. Imaam Ahmad recorded in his Musnad that the Messenger of Allaah (PBUH) said that supplications are answered in one of the following three ways:

1.       By actually granting what was  being asked

2.       By warding off a harm that would afflict the person

3.       As gifts awaiting the person in the next life, which is the best form of du’a being answered.

Thus, do not despair of the Mercy of Allaah if it seemed to you that your supplication is not answered (that is, what you asked is not actually given), for you  can  not tell whether it had been granted through the other ways. Furthermore, acknowledge the fact that Allah knows what is best for you.

“...but perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.” (Q2:216)

Having understood the ways supplications are accepted and answered, it is also essential to know the reasons why sometimes supplications might not be answered. The following are some of the reasons:

·         Associating or calling others than Allaah

·         Earnings from forbidden means and committing sins without seeking Allah’s forgiveness

·         Leaving out the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad

·         Impatience after making supplications

·         Asking for something evil or severing of bloodrelations

Some Specific Times to Supplicate

It has been authentically collected that there are some specific times at which  the degree of supplication acceptance is heightened, and thus, it is recommended youboost your supplications during those times. Some of these are enlisted below:

·         When in Sujood (Prostration)

·         At the end of Salah (the five daily prayers)

·         The period between Adhan and Iqamah

·         Immediately after making Wudhu (Ablution)

·         In the third part of the night

·         Whilst fasting and at the time of Iftar

·         An hour on Friday

·         When waking up at night

·         Whilst travelling

·         Whilst drinking Zamzam

·         On the day of Arafah (9th day of Dhul Hijjah)

·         When suffering injustice and oppression

·         First ten days of Dhul Hijjah

In conclusion, supplication is an act of worship through which you can depend and connect to your Lord. He has promised that He will respond to your invocations in as much as you also respond to Him by obedience. Thus, make your supplication sincerely to Him and take the opportunity of this blessed month to supplicate, for the invocation of the fasting person is not rejected. Jazakumul-Laahu Khayran.
