5 Simple Ways to Incorporate Islam to all Levels of Education at Homes and Schools

by Shittu Rasaq
Alhamdulilah, knowledge is the foundation with which Islam stands. This could simply be reinforced by the simple fact that the first chapter revealed to the messenger of Allah, Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) emphasises on this. In addition, if we care further to probe into generation before the generation of Muhammad, we will still see the relevance of knowledge being the basis of lives. Allah says in Quran chapter 2 verse 30 that Adam was taught the names of all things. It is also the basis with which we applaud our scholar with reference the statement of Allah which say those who revere their creator are the scholars, the knowledgeable. It is with this we would equivocally establish that knowledge is the foundation with which Islam is built.
Being that as it may, why then do we need Islamization?
Knowledge could be likened to a double edge sword. The right side of the sword is the Islamically acceptable application of knowledge while the other side is the various abuses and unacceptable application of knowledge as a result of corruption. Acquisition of knowledge has been corrupted with filthy ideologies and methodologies that promote abuses of morals. We have in recent times been hearing about various juvenile delinquent acts being the produce of these filthy and corrupt methodologies in learning. Most materials require to facilitate learning has attributed success and achievement to none worthy and none acceptable personalities and ideologies.
Effort of Islamic researcher, particularly of the Islamic Online University pioneered by Dr Bilal Philips has brought about principles that could be adopted to balance knowledge such that the right side of the sword will be incorporated in the learning methodologies which will subsequently metamorphose into moulding acceptable personalities. The principles are briefed under the following headings as follows:
1.      Classroom environment and lesson contents (These could be replicated in our homes in term of what we expose the kids to) -This environment together with activities that goes on there can be likened to a life moulding machine. It goes a long way to shape the lives of children to what they develop to represent all through their lives. Everything accessible to their sights in term of what the children see, what is heard, what is felt using all their senses will determine their consciousness of their creator. A simple example could be demonstrated with thee two scenarios.

(a)    An environment where statements such as “salaamualaykum” is repeatedly said during greetings, “Alhamdulillhah” as remark to express satisfaction or otherwise, “subhanaLlah” upon strange experiences “jazakaLlahukhayran” as sign of appreciation, “audhubuLlah” upon evil thought, “mashaaLlah” as an expression of hope, “BismiLlah” to commence activities etc children grow to key into the culture of the environment and subsequently, grow to be conscious of the origin and meaning of the words.
(b)   An environment where statements such as Hi, wow, are the norms, the kids grow into the culture of such civilisation which may not prioritise the pleasure of Allah in their dispositions.
2.      Islamic Historic relevance
The Islamic historic relevance to whatever aspect of learning the kids are exposed to is necessary to help them internalise the virtue in the religion as a way of life. We cannot rule out the contributions of numerous scholars of Islam in various disciplines in the 21st century, including the convert amidst them. In the field of law, we would not rule out Sharia as worthwhile example to be cited so that the kids will know it as part of Muslims inheritance.
The likes of Ehab Abouheif , Evolutionary biologist at McGill University Department of Biology, McGill University, Rana Dajani, Molecular biologist Dr.Rana Dajani, Fatima Jackson, African-American biologist and anthropologist currently teaching in Howard university in Washington Fatimah Jackson to mention but few are relevant examples in discussion about those specilisations.
Other than these scientists, there are medical doctors and surgeons such as Laurence Brown[convert], Zakir Naik, Muszaphar Shukor, Ibrahim B. Syed, and Nizam Peerwani who are grinded in the area of medicine.
Philosopher such as Kwame Anthony Appiah was born in London, grew up in Ghana, received his Ph.D. from Clare College, Cambridge, and currently is a Professor with the NYU Department of Philosophy and the NYU School of Law. Much of his focus is in political theory and moral philosophy, and he is a leading name in race and identity studies. His early work was in the philosophy of language, and its influence carries into his later, more significant work in political and moral theory are quite numerous to mention but few. Citations like these in the course of learning will help learners understand there are Muslims worthy of emulation such that they can aspire to be one.
3.      Relevant Islamic verses
There is absolutely nothing that Allah has left unaddressed in His books. Those who know it do while those who are ignorant are ignorant of it. Allah said ask from the knowledgeable in case you do not know. The knowledge of the permissible and the non-permissible is evident in the Quran, the right of the orphan, the right of Man and Women alike, the rule of inheritance amongst others are matters Allah has addressed in His words, the Quran. When learning bothers on some of these subjects, they are good citation to fix the mind of the kids for the purpose of being guided.
4.      Relevant Hadith
The explanation of the messenger of Allah suffices on most subject matters when they are been addressed. Brief citation of some of these will continue to bring some forms of religious consciousness to the lives of our children.
5.      Moral message
By the way Allah has created us, our senses could categorise some morally acceptable stance and regular citation will help our children grow in the light of the Quran and Sunnah.
In all honesty, the wisdom in the principles should not be restricted to schools alone. Our various homes should portray same principles. This is necessary so that we will not be giving our wards contradictory dose for the purposes of learning that will build their future as they commence their life moulding exercises from childhood.
